Disclaimer: If you feel I should’ve included other songs to this list, or you don’t agree with my picks… make your own damn list!!!
It’s that time again, where I sit down and write a list of 20 plus songs that I liked in 2012. I say 20 plus because the G.O.O.D Music album Cruel Summer had too many songs for me to pick through so I included more than one song. Plus my honorable mentions… Maybe I shouldn’t put a number limit on the list. I’ll try that at the end of 2013.
Anyway, Here we go… In descending order this time! (Edit: Now with youtube links!):
20) Rihanna ft. Chris Brown – Birthday Cake (remix) :
When she included only like a minute of the song on her album Talk That Talk, I was like “she needs to put out the full song, asap rocky.” Obviously she heard me and not only did she put out the full song, she enlisted her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown a.k.a Ike Turner Jr to help out. One thing I love about Rihanna is she gives NO fucks at all, so when people were outraged about the pairing they had no choice but to fuckin’ deal with it. Plus the song is hot so whatevs.
Bonus: Rihanna – Power It Up
because I listen to this song everyday. A females take on Bandsa Make Her Dance? Yeah, classic. This song epitomizes the fact that Rihanna still will never give a fuck about nothin’!
19) Trinidad James – All Gold Everything
Popped a Molly I’m Sweatin, WOO. If you know me, you know I like hoodrat, ratchet, coon shit. Trinidad James is the epitome of hoodrat, ratchet, coon shit. Therefore, All Gold Everything got constant play from me.
18) Miguel – Adorn
I didn’t want to like this song, but dammit! I like this song. It reminds me of some old school R&B a little bit.
17) A$AP Rocky ft a shitload of rappers – 1 Train :
Danny Brown had the best flow on this track by far. This is another track that reminded me of like the old school hip-hop days. When music was good I guess.
Bonus : A$AP Rocky ft 2 Chainz, Drake and Kendrick Lamar – Fuckin’ Problems :
Kendrick totally Bodied this track. I really shouldn’t include anymore A$AP Rocky songs (exception being Goldie) since his album isn’t due out til like January or something… But his shit leaked so fuck your couch.
16) Kendrick Lamar ft Dr. Dre – The Recipe
If this song was any indication of things that Dre was working on for that non-existent Detox album, then I’m sad that we will never hear that album.
Bonus : Kendrick Lamar – Swimming Pools
This song isn’t just about drinking at a party (of which I am a connoisseur) It actually tells a story of Peer Pressure (which in my opinion does not exist.) and dude getting really wasted at a friends party. The album good kid maad city was actually like a movie. Sort’ve reminded me of the movie Gang Tape.
15) MGK ft 2 Chainz, Mystikal Meek Mill, French Montana, Yo Gotti – Wild Boy (Remix) :
Man this song had me “turnt up”. I’d love to party with MGK brah. And plus 2 Chainz was on it, and we all know I love him. Speaking of 2 Chainz…
14) 2 Chainz ft Drake – No Lie
I feel like half of this countdown is pretty much starring this man. It’s no secret how much I love 2 Chainz. I don’t think he’s the best rapper ever, but I love his style. He knows his style and how to make it fit the beat. He’s pretty much a genius to be able to rap how he does and still make it worth listening to.
Bonus: 2 Chainz – Crack
When I’m on my way to the trap, I’m bumpin this, cuz.
13) Chief Keef ft G.O.O.D Music & Jadakiss – Don’t Like (remix)
Regardless of whatever Chief Keef says, if it wasn’t for Kanye I would’ve never given this track a chance. I think Keef and his label/label-mates are fuckin’ basura. Their saving grace is their catchy hooks, as shown in this song and their in house producer Young Chop. Yeah anyway Pusha T, Big Sean and Jadakiss lyrically kill on this… Kanye’s verse was not that great, but whatevs.
12) Gotye – Somebody That I Used To Know
I’ll admit the only reason why I heard this song was because of Glee. Sue me. But this song is fuckin’ great. Great break up song, great “i’m depressed today” song. The world needs more fuckin emo music. This song would’ve done well in 2001 when emo music ruled the world.
11) Reese ft Rick Ross & Drake – Us (remix) :
AT THE TOP ITS JUST US NIGGAS, CUZ I DONT REALLY TRUST NIGGAS!!! Again, catchy hook… Reese just sucks lyrically. (Please don’t beat me up/kill me. 3 hunna.) Drake did ok on this, Ross verse was trash in my opinion. Another Young Chop beat. Catchy Hook + Young Chop on the beat = the formula for a hit.
10) Kanye West – Cold
Using a bar from Ma$e’s hit Lookin’ At Me, Kanye asks the burning question : “can’t a young nigga get money anymore?” . Yes, Kanye. Yes you can.
9) Kanye West, Big Sean, Jay-Z – Clique
This was the single that made me antsy for Cruel Summer. Beat is fire, Hook is fire, Big Sean’s verse was ok, but everyone elses? FIRE!!!
8) Juicy J ft Lil Wayne & 2 Chainz – Bandsa Make Her Dance (Remix)
I went to Miami and heard this and the song following this at every fuckin’ club. I still listen to this shit and combo it with Rihanna’s version. Juicy J can pretty much do anything and I’ll just pretty much love it.
7) French Montana ft Rick Ross, Drake & Lil Wayne – Pop That
The best thing about this song besides the beat and the hype-ness is the fucking Luke sample from everyones favorite party song “Doo Doo Brown.”
6) Kid Cudi ft King Chip – Just What I Am
Man, this song pretty much describes me… I’m just what God made. So glad Cudi went back to his original rapping style instead of that bullshit we got on that WZRD album. and that song Creepers on Cruel Summer was basura, i don’t care what anyone says.
5) E40 ft a shitload of people – Function (remix)
Man, if you’re not down with E40 and his hyphy shit then you haven’t lived. Listen to this song and Young Jeezy’s RIP together and turn up, bitch.
4) Justin Bieber (yes, you read right) ft 2 Chainz, Mac Miller & Asher Roth – Boyfriend (Remix)
2 chainz murdered this song, and made me forget it was Bieber song. Justin got fuckin’ lucky with this one. Asher Roth’s verse was whack.
3) Frank Ocean ft Andre 3000 – Pink Matter
2012 was the year of 3 stacks creeping out of whatever hole he is living in and murdering peoples tracks. This time him and Frank did a great job at creating a masterpiece.
Bonus : Frank Ocean – Pyramids
Newfound appreciation for this song. That’s all.
2) G.O.O.D Music – Higher/Sin City
I had to include both because to me it is just one song. When I listen to Higher, I listen to Sin City right after, like I’m supposed to. Ma$e did his thing on Higher. The production on Higher was godlike. My bro thinks Cyhi’s verse on Sin City is supposed to be a continuation of Kanye’s verse in No Church In The Wild… What do you think??
1) G.O.O.D Music – Mercy
This song was everywhere. Clearly song of the year. Again, another 2 Chainz feature that was a classic. The beat is FIRE. Everyones verses were great. The beat transition from Kanye’s verses demonic instrumental to the original beat for 2 chainz verse was very smoothly done that it further proves that Kanye is an insane genius. I dunno what 2013 is gonna give us music-wise but it pretty much has to exceed this track, which will be very difficult to do.
Honorable Mentions : Nicki Minaj ft Rick Ross & Cam’ron – I Am Your Leader, Nicki Minaj ft 2 Chainz – Beez In The Trap, Future ft Diddy & Ludacris – Same Damn Time (Remix), Cruel Summer album (Except Creepers and The One, those songs I instantly skip), 2 Chainz – Crack.
See You In 2013, Fuckers.
